Interview Scott Cossar Mudjimba Family Day Care Service in Queensland C4K: What is your name? SC: My name is Scott McKenzie Cossar and I am 46. C4K: What is your professional background and career experience? SC: My background with children is that I am a father to two beautiful boys Finn (13) and Lokki (8). I am currently an age manager for Mudjimba Surf Club for the past seven years. When I have time, I visit the boy's school and help with reading and art classes. I have been a qualified swim coach for a season, teaching toddlers to ten year olds. I also participate in the boys swimming lessons when their school holds them in the warmer months. C4K: What attracted you to a career in child care? SC: I am extremely passionate about my two boys Finn and Lokki, about their learning, about their awareness of the world, the people, the planet, the universe, the fauna and flora, the sustainability of our survival as we live, love and evolve on this finite place we call home. C4K: What does a ‘normal' day look like for you? SC: There's nothing "normal" about a day for me. Every day brings new and exciting gifts and challenges. I take nothing for granted, expect nothing in return and receive everything at face value. I love to explore the unexplored and question the unquestionable. Most times I am rewarded with a laugh and a smile from the young people I interact with daily. C4K: What are some of the advantages of working in the child care sector? SC: Wow, what a wonderful question, however I feel your readers aren't in a position to read a 1000 page novel on, "the advantages of working with children". When I retire I'll get to that one as well. But for now, in a word: privileged. C4K: What are some of the biggest challenges facing the child care sector? SC: Well, from my brief experience in this industry, Direction, I believe is the biggest challenge. My belief is that in the past child care has been a reactive process not proactive. We also tend to hang onto traditional methods and resist change. We can learn from the past but we also need to experiment and explore for future education care methods. Most importantly appreciate being in the moment, seeing things as children see them. C4K: How has your place of work changed to deal with these challenges? SC: My place of work has now given me the opportunity to expand my ideas and creativity, it has given my partner Robbie and I the opportunity to present our business to the wider community as a sustainable and environmentally friendly, art inspired centre. C4K: How does the industry need to change to adapt to these challenges? SC: With an open mind. Our belief is to change and explore for the sake of good, not just for the sake of change. C4K: What advice would you offer someone thinking about a career or looking for a promotion in child care? SC: Your choice to enter a career in child care is a promotion in its self. I can't think of any other industry which you could choose that gives you the opportunity to be at the grass roots level of guiding, developing, watching, recording, exploring and experiencing our future (children) as they grow into beautiful people, mums and dads, doctors and gardeners, scientists and truck drivers, florists and designers. I guess my advice or w.o.w. for today would be that I am blessed to be here. We seem to be the only beings on the earth that can perceive the future. If a child is given an oak tree seed to hold and is explained that, with time, nurturing and love, this seed will grow into an enormous oak tree, providing for future generations and its existence in the world will be a better place If you or someone you know deserves to be featured in this section drop us a line at editor@careforkids.com.au.
