In wake of a spate of Hepatitis A cases (13 across Australia) the Victorian Department of Education and Training has issued a health warning and information sheet to all early childhood education and care services.
The recommendations are that the following products should be discarded or returned to the point of sale for a refund regardless of best before dates:
- Nanna's Frozen Mixed Berries 1kg packet
- Nanna's Frozen Raspberries 1kg packets
- Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries 300 gram packets
- Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries 500 gram packets
While the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has confirmed that the risk of exposure is very low it cannot be excluded and any students or staff who have consumed the affected products should be advised to keep an eye out for symptoms 15 to 50 days after consumption.
Symptoms include fever, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine and yellow skin and eyes (jaundice). Symptoms may last for several weeks but full recovery usually occurs.
In addition to the above the department has made the following recommendations to early childhood services:
- Early Childhood Services are asked to stop using any of the recalled berries.
- Services which have used the recalled berries should communicate immediately with families of children.
- Services should encourage staff or families of children to seek medical advice if they develop symptoms 15-50 days after consumption of the frozen berries
- Services should encourage staff and families of children to check any of the recalled berry supplies at home and discard them or return them to the point of sale if appropriate.
The department has compiled a list of frequently asked questions which can help answer some of the more common questions about the recall. To view the FAQs click here |
