Celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future

Each year around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Hundreds of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday.
Organisations, governments and women's groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues.
Some years have seen global IWD themes honoured around the world, while in other years groups have preferred to 'localise' their own themes to make them more specific and relevant.

One of the main nationwide themes for Australia this year is the UNIFEM: Unite to End Violence Against Women.

UNIFEM is the women's fund at the United Nations, dedicated to advancing women's rights and achieving gender equality. It provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies that foster women's empowerment. UNIFEM works on the premise that it is the fundamental right of every woman to live a life free from discrimination and violence, and that gender equality is essential to achieving development and to building just societies.

In the words of one of our generation's most inspirational women and creator of the world's best-selling Harry Potter book series:

"Anything's possible if you've got enough nerve"! J. K. Rowling.

Or as Faith Whittlesey said: "Remember ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in high heels"!
