The advantages of choosing child care close to work

Ask any parent, and they will tell you that choosing appropriate day care for a young child is not simple. There are many things to consider, such as a centre's learning philosophy, nutrition options, staff qualifications and facilities.
Parents who live close to their work have a more straightforward choice, but anyone who commutes to work also has to decide if they want a centre that is close to home or work.
Rose Todd, Manager of Education and Care for Gowrie NSW, a leader in child care for more than 70 years, agrees that there are many factors to take into consideration.
"I always tell parents they should first choose a place where they feel completely comfortable with both the people and program", said Rose. "However, while many people chose a centre near home, there are also many advantages to choosing a centre that is close to work".
According to Rose, these advantages include knowing the child is never very far away; quick access to the child if something comes up and being able to pop in to breast feed your baby if required.
"Parents who work in the Sydney CBD and choose a centre close to work, also tend to have more centres to choose from and more centres with vacancies", she says.
Bryony Feltham a parent whose child attends Lady Gowrie City Centre located in Margaret Street in the heart of Sydney, loves having her children in a child care centre near her work.
"Being close to the centre means I can pop in and see my children at any time and be part of their life at the centre", says Bryony. "I can share important celebrations, child care events, morning tea or lunch, and I often join them for lunch, or take them out for a walk".
Bryony went on to say that her children love to know that she is only five minutes away and she feels reassured knowing that she can be with them quickly if they are unwell or need her to settle them.
"We also enjoy our train trip together, we read, watch the cyclists cross the bridge and count buses", Bryony said.
While she was still breastfeeding, proximity to work was also very important to Bryony.
"I was able to quickly go from work to child care to breastfeed and didn't need to worry about storing breast milk, or using lactation facilities at work. All of these things have helped my family negotiate the tricky return to work and separation anxiety that can be a reality for parents and children".
