Choosing the right childcare

Finding the right childcare for your child can feel overwhelming. With so many options and opinions it’s natural to feel unsure about where to start. Remember, the best choice is one that fits your family’s unique needs, whether it’s your budget, location, values, or the type of care your child requires. Here are some tips to help you make this decision with confidence.

Start with Research

Your journey begins by researching the childcare services available in your area, you can do this by using the Care for Kids website to compare services near you. Then work out how much Childcare Subsidy (CCS) you may be entitled to, using the Care for Kids CCS Calculator

Another helpful starting point is to check the National Quality Standard (NQS) rating which assesses services on education and other important factors like staff qualifications, cleanliness, safety, and more. These ratings will give you an overall picture of the quality the service provides.

Shortlist and Tour

From your research create a shortlist of three to five services that stand out to you and book a tour. When you step inside, pay attention to how the space feels—does it seem welcoming, calm, and child-friendly?

This is also a great time to ask questions that matter to you, including:

  • How are toys and play areas kept clean?
  • How do they handle dietary requirements when preparing meals?
  • Are places available for the days and hours I need?
  • What are the educator-to-child ratios?
  • How does the service accommodate children with additional needs?
  • What is the service’s approach to managing sickness and emergencies?
  • Can parents visit at any time, and how involved can they be in the centre’s activities?

Trust your instincts—if the service feels right and the educators are engaged with the children, that’s a positive sign.

Understanding Waitlists

Many services have waitlists, so it’s important to be prepared. Keep in mind that each centre has its own enrollment policies and some may require a deposit to secure your place. Your tour is a good time to ask about the waitlist process and how long it may take to receive a spot for your child.

Look for a Nurturing Learning Environment

The right childcare service will provide more than just a safe space—it should also offer opportunities for play and learning that nurture your child’s development. A high-quality service will:

  • Encourage your child to explore and learn at their own pace
  • Foster close relationships between staff and children
  • Support social, emotional, and cognitive development in a balanced way

When choosing a service, it’s important to find one that values your role as a parent and works in partnership with your family to ensure your child thrives.

Trust Your Decision

Once you’ve considered your options, feel confident in your choice. If you're still deciding, KU Children’s Services is highly regarded, consistently earning top ratings in many local areas. With no deposit to join the waitlist, KU makes the process easy, allowing you to focus on your child’s development and happiness.

Though the process may seem daunting, by following these steps, you’ll find a childcare provider that meets your family’s needs and offers your child a safe, supportive space to thrive.
