In an effort to better prepare children for a future where skills in technology, maths and science will be a priority the Australian Government is making a $14 million injection in to programs designed to inspire kids and motivate kids to develop an interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
According to the Government around 75 per cent of the fast growing industries require STEM skills and this investment will help future-proof the Australian economy.
The money is being allocated to the Little Scientists program and the Let’s Count program, both of which are part of the National Innovation and Science Agenda and were established to help Australia’s youngest minds develop an interest in these fields.
According to the Government these programs have the potential to reach 350,000 young children across the country and will employ innovative and fun teaching strategies to better engage kids in STEM subjects.
Speaking during a doorstep interview at the Mother Teresa Early Learning Centre in the ACT Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said developing capacity in STEM is crucial for Australia to be successful in the future.
"…it has to start right across the board. This is a change for every age, but above all, it needs to ensure that our youngest Australians, the preschoolers, are becoming more numerate, more scientifically literate, and what better way to do that than here in schools with programs like this, that excite them," he said.
