In July this year the Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria (DVRCV) and the Community Child Care (CCC) Association hosted the inaugural Responding to and preventing family violence – The role of early childhood professionals conference.
The purpose of this meeting was to provide a forum for early childhood carers and educators to meet with professionals working in the area of domestic violence to explore the role early childhood services could have in preventing and responding to domestic violence.
In addition, early childhood educators are ideally placed to work with children to develop a strong foundation of gender equality and an understanding of the importance of respectful relationships to help prevent violence in the next generation and this conference aimed to equip them with the skills and resource to do just that.
The meeting was held in Victoria, which precluded many providers from attending however the conference organisers have collated all the resources so that early childhood services across the country can access the learnings shared on the day as well as additional resources which may be of information and assistance.
This conference resources page includes video recordings of the plenary sessions and some of the presentation slides. In addition to this, a number of resources to support prevention of domestic violence through early childhood settings were discussed and included:
- DVRCV's Partners in Prevention (PiP) project which includes links to a number of resources to support the prevention of violence against women and promote respectful relationships in early childhood services and schools. This project is ongoing and to continue to receive new information and resources, you can join PiP.
-
Gender equity audit tools. While a specific tool for early childhood services doesn't exist yet, there are two tools for organisational settings which early childhood settings may find useful: Women's Health Loddon Mallee Gender Equity Quality Standards: A Resource for Organisations, Vic Health Applying a gender lens in the workplace
-
DVRCV's A - Z of Preventing Domestic Violence Against Women. This valuable resource will include 26 everyday actions early childhood settings and other organisations can do to prevent violence against women.
