After a busy day, kids often need a snack when they get home from child care or school. Giving children the responsibility of making their own food builds the foundation for a life of healthy eating, and being involved in the kitchen also entices fussy eaters to try new foods.
So, though it might get a little messy, involving your kids in the preparation of an afternoon snack is a great way to spend time together whilst encouraging healthy choices.
Here are 8 super-easy snacks that even the littlest of chefs can help to prepare:
Fruit and cheese kebabs: Simply cut up some cheese cubes and their favourite fruit – apple, strawberries, watermelon – and thread them onto a wooden skewer.
Pizza crackers: Place your favourite pizza toppings on some wholewheat crackers – ham, pineapple, cheese – and pop under the grill for a few minutes.
Play sushi: Flatten bread slices with a rolling pin. Spread cream cheese over the slices, place carrot and cucumber slices in the middle and roll up.
Celery logs: Take a piece of celery, top with cream cheese and turkey slices. Can also be done with mayonnaise and tuna, or hummus and chicken.
Apple wraps: Slice an apple and some cheese into wedges. Take one slice of apple and one slice of cheese and wrap together with a slice of ham. Repeat for all pieces. This can also be served with a dipping bowl of plain yoghurt.
Hummus wraps: Spread hummus on a wrap, lay sliced cucumber and feta cheese in the middle and roll up.
Avocado boats: Scoop out the flesh of 1 avocado mash it with 1 teaspoon of lime juice. Put the mixture back in the avocado skin and serve with nacho chips.
Mini fruit pizzas: Cut 'pizza bases' out of a plain wrap using a cookie cutter. Mix some Greek yoghurt with a little honey and spread on the bases. Decorate with your children's favourite fruit! Yum! |
