Understanding big feelings for the under fives: Using quality children's media for good during challenging times
By Linda Harrison
Early Childhood Education Consultant for ABC Kids Early Education

If your family is affected by the recent wave of COVID lockdowns, chances are you and your children are feeling more than your fair share of big emotions! The pandemic has meant that most routines have been set aside and children are spending their days at home amidst the juggle of parents working and older siblings learning online. We mustn't forget though, that these times of uncertainty can also have a big impact on our youngest family members.

ABC Kids Early Education is a popular online destination for parents and child care educators alike, packed with resources, videos and games for little ones. As part of Care for Kids' commitment to supporting the education of children from birth to school age, we have partnered with ABC Kids Early Education to bring you the latest information on topics that are relevant to you and your family. We're handing the reigns over to the ABC team, and they will share their practical and proven advice on how to achieve the best educational outcomes for the under 5's.
Teaching multiple languages to under fives
Your child's mother tongue enables them to communicate, learn, socialise and make sense of the world, and if you're fortunate enough to know two (or more) languages, then you're encouraged to share them with your little linguist.

Bilingualism and multilingualism have great benefits for under fives, and there are lots of ways for parents and educators to support language learning in the early years.

To see how under fives can become bilingual and biliterate (or multilingual and multiliterate), we spoke with Professor Paola Escudero.
Brain-building activities for under-fives
Your child's brain grows fastest from the time they're born to the time they go to school, and in these first five years, there are many ways you can support their learning.

Everyday interactions, like mealtimes and bedtimes, offer extraordinary opportunities to build your child's brain, and Vroom Tips™ are a great way to harness the magic in these moments.

Vroom® is a global program of the Bezos Family Foundation, and they offer over 1,000 free, science-based activities for ages zero to five.
