How to prepare for a successful drop off

1.Arrive Early

Plan to arrive a little earlier than usual on the first day. This allows both you and your child to adjust without feeling rushed. A calm start helps set a positive tone for the day.

2.Positive and Upbeat Tone

Children are highly perceptive of their parents’ emotions. If you maintain a positive and confident attitude, your child is more likely to feel secure. Encourage them with positive thoughts about the exciting new experiences ahead, such as playing with new toys.

3.Familiarise Your Child with the Environment

Upon arrival, take a few minutes to help your child explore the room. Show them where their belongings are stored, where the toilets are, and introduce them to their educators. This helps your child feel more at ease in their new surroundings.

4.Keep Goodbyes Brief and Positive

A quick, loving goodbye is essential. Prolonged goodbyes can increase anxiety for both parent and child. A short hug, kiss, and a reassuring statement like "I’ll be back to pick you up soon" helps create a smooth transition.

5.It’s Okay if Your Child Cries

It’s perfectly normal for children to cry when saying goodbye. Educators are trained to comfort and reassure them, and most children settle quickly after their parents leave. Parents can call the centre later to check in if they’re feeling anxious.

6.Establish a Goodbye Routine

Consistency helps ease the drop-off process over time. Consider establishing a special goodbye routine, such as a unique wave or phrase, or bringing a comfort item from home.

7.Trial Sessions

Many centres offer trial sessions before the official start date. These sessions allow the child to become familiar with the environment and educators, and they also give parents a chance to learn the daily routines. Taking advantage of these sessions can make the first day easier.

8.Take Time for Yourself

After dropping your child off, take a moment for yourself. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee or simply having a few minutes to relax, it’s important to take care of your own emotional well-being.
