About the Curriculum
“Let the child be the scriptwriter, director and the actor in their own play” - Magda Gerber
Nursery Space: 6 weeks – 2 years
Learning starts from before birth, and our Educators have created a welcoming and nurturing nursery environment where each baby feels safe to explore and discover new things - through their senses, their communication and cues (body language, facial expression and sounds) and by experimenting. On any given day you can see the nursery children engaging in all types of play, water play, music time, story time and more. Every day provides a brand new, exciting adventure for our babies to support their development, learning and wellbeing!
Toddler Space: 2 - 3 years
Our teachers and educators encourage the children to learn through play to help enhance their sensory-motor development. This happens through carefully planned music, dance, games and reading experiences.
On any given day the Toddler children can be seen developing their numeracy by building a tower, sorting objects, pointing and identifying shapes and patterns and participating in counting songs and games.
Children in our toddler space are encouraged to participate in group play. Group play is important as it helps our toddlers develop important social skills such as, turn taking, developing self confidence and emotional self regulation. Our team helps children through talking, planning and role modelling.
Kindergarten Space: 3 – 6 years
Kindergarten is a unique time for learning with peers and developing skills for later learning including confidence and curiosity, important skills for starting school. Our play-based program encourages active engagement in learning and supports a range of positive developmental outcomes including resilience, independence, critical thinking and creativity.
The oral language supports literacy learning. A child’s oral language ability is the best predictor for later success in learning to read and write. Hearing the sounds within a language is the first critical step for all literacy learning. Our team supports our Kindergarten children's development by engaging in rich discussions, introducing new vocabulary as part of everyday conversations, as well as singing, playing games, and reading with the children daily.
Throughout the Kindergarten year, children use their language to share ideas, ask questions, express themselves, and connect with peers and adults in social settings.
Social-emotional skills, including the ability to self-regulate emotions, is supported through group learning environments. Our team supports each child’s social and emotional development by labelling and talking about emotions and supporting appropriate responses as together, they engage in new and challenging situations. Lastly, ensuring that all children are ready for the ‘big school’ by preparing them for all that ‘big school’ has to offer.
Morning
Ellie is 11 months old and enjoys sensory play outside in the sandpit with her friends. She sits near her educator who helps teach her how to scoop the sand into the bucket. Ellie is learning how to dig, carry, and move the sand. She is also exploring texture and learning what happens to the sand when she adds water!
Lunch
Ellie has finished her lunch and is preparing to take a nap. Her educator changes her nappy, prepares a bottle and reads Ellie a story before her afternoon sleep.
Afternoon
Ellie and some of her nursery friends enjoy some story time and songs outside in the shaded garden. They read ‘Peepo’ which is Ellie’s favourite book.
Morning
Josh is two and a half years old and loves to start his day at the centre outside on the climbing equipment. His friends join him, and together they pretend to be pirates on a ship looking for treasure. Through this exciting dramatic play, Josh is learning about himself and the world around him. Dramatic play is helping Josh identify his interests, abilities, likes and dislikes.
Lunch
Josh is watering the vegetables in the garden. By doing this, Josh is learning the importance of growing and caring for the veggies in the garden. Josh picks a tomato from the garden, which the Chef will use to help make Josh and his friend’s lunch - Spaghetti Bolognese!
Afternoon
Josh enjoys art, and today he is painting a beach scene from a recent family holiday. He adds the finishing touches and sets the painting aside to dry; so that he can take it home to share with his family.
While painting, Josh is learning how to express himself creatively and how to convey his ideas and emotions. Painting is also helping develop Josh’s hand eye coordination, finger, wrist and hand strength. Making marks on paper is important for self expression as well as later learning.
Morning
Charlotte is almost five years old and can’t wait for today’s carpentry experience - she loves building things! Carpentry experiences allow Charlotte and her friends to extend their learning through real-life experiences. While participating in carpentry, Charlotte is learning to problem solve, experiment and predict. She is also improving her hand eye coordination, manipulative skills and muscular strength.
Lunch
Before Charlotte sits down for lunch with her friends and educators, Charlotte takes part in the centre’s sports program. Charlotte loves sports. Sports helps Charlotte improve her flexibility and strength (perfect for growing bodies!). Sports also allows her to practice different skills in a fun and engaging way.
Afternoon
Charlotte is off to ‘big school’ next year and she can't wait to start! Charlotte and her friends will be visiting the local primary school next week. In preparation for the visit, the class is creating a list of questions to ask the Principal and school children.
Health and Nutrition
Health and Nutrition
Our centre chef prepares and cooks healthy and nutritious meals daily, catering to the unique dietary requirements of every child. We believe that by encouraging active participation (such as growing their own fruit and vegetables, preparing, and finally cooking!) children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of healthy eating.
Our centre offers children nutrient-rich, unprocessed, and seasonal whole foods – created to delight the fussiest eaters.

Hi my name is Rebecca, and I am the Centre Manager here at The Learning Sanctuary Pakenham. My career in early learning started in 2010. I joined the team at The Learning Sanctuary Pakenham in May 2023. In my career, I have worked in various roles from Inclusion Support, Assistant Educator, Lead Educator, Sustainability Leader, Educational Leader, Assistant Centre Manager and now Centre Manager. I hold a Diploma in Children’s Services (Early Childhood Education and Care), Certificate IV in Community Services Work and am Working towards completing an Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management. I was inspired to work in Early Education because it opened opportunities for me to be creative, have a meaningful impact on people’s lives and build strong relationships with my community.
At The Learning Sanctuary, Pakenham, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive environment. When educators and families work together, we can achieve quality outcomes for children. We are always ready to listen, offer guidance and support, and help families connect with local community services. In a dedicated early learning environment, children can build positive relationships, learn to be independent and develop a sense of belonging.
In our centre, we have an incredible long-standing and diverse team of educators. At The Learning Sanctuary Pakenham, we’re dedicated to ensuring the safety, protection, and well-being of the children in our care. We understand how important child safety is and ensure that your child’s well-being is taken seriously. We offer all our families an opportunity for a “stay and play” in your child’s room before their first day. We encourage families to use this opportunity to spend time with their new educators and environments to build a sense of belonging and security. We also use this opportunity to support families through their enrolment process. We also offer families homemade snacks, including fresh fruit, muffins, cookies and coffee in the morning and afternoons. We host regular centre events and have regular excursions into our local community. I believe in transparency and an open-door policy for our families and our community. We rely on collaboration and communication to ensure our programs reflect the needs of our families and children.

Centre Reviews
Stay far away from this place!!! Our experience here has been nothing short of a nightmare, and I would never recommend this place... Stay far away from this place!!! Our experience here has been nothing short of a nightmare, and I would never recommend this place to anyone who cares about their child’s health and wellbeing. The 4 months of our enrolment (July-October) have been an endless cycle of sickness. At the centre, our child contracted multiple colds and nappy rashes (one of which led to a UTI), an ear infection, gastro and hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFM). 1-2 days of attendance were followed by 1-3 weeks of recovering from some kind of sickness at home. The centre’s complete lack of care and transparency has made this an absolute disaster. The HFM outbreak has been dragging on for almost five weeks now (since the start of October), and the information we got from the centre was all over the place. On 10th October, I spoke with Madeline (second in charge of the centre), who confirmed at least two HFM cases earlier that week. Yet, on 15th October, Amber (the room lead educator) claimed there had been no cases since 7th October, despite the centre having sent a warning to parents on 8th October. The inconsistencies are blatant, and it is clear they don’t have a grip on the situation at all. Couple weeks ago, gastro also started spreading, and this is where things got even worse. We were the first reported case in the nursery, and I notified Madeline, on Monday, 21st October. On Wednesday, 23rd October, another parent from the same room also reported gastro, yet the centre still did absolutely nothing. I sent two urgent emails and made multiple calls, yet no warning to other parents, no follow-up, no nothing. Even after Madeline promised over the phone she’d send out a communication about the outbreak, nothing happened. It feels like they are more concerned with covering up the problem than actually dealing with it. According to their own policies, two cases within a few days should trigger an outbreak warning, but they just ignored it. This isn’t just poor communication - it is negligence. Their hygiene practices (or lack of thereof) are revolting. On multiple occasions, I’ve seen educators not wearing gloves while changing nappies or wiping kids’ noses, and toys that went straight from one kid’s mouth to another with no cleaning in between. Nappies were too small, leaving red marks on the kids’ legs, and one time a child was wearing a jumper, a puffer vest and a beanie indoors on a 20+ degree day while other children were in T-shirts. It’s absolutely unacceptable. The centre’s approach to communication is beyond frustrating. Whenever you ask about your child’s day, be prepared to get a standard “I don’t know, I just got here.” There is absolutely no handover between educators throughout the day, no consistency, and certainly no accountability. For a place that is supposed to care for children, they sure don’t seem to know what’s happening with them. And whenever you contact them about something important, like a health issue, it takes days to get a response. Yet, they’ll reply to emails about money or enrolment forms within an hour. The priorities here are completely messed up. After yet another round of sickness following our last day at the centre, we finally pulled our child out because we couldn’t trust the centre to keep them safe. If you’re thinking about enrolling your child here, DON’T. They always seem to have spots available, and now I understand why. It’s not worth the constant illness, the stress, or the frustration of dealing with a centre that doesn’t take basic health and safety seriously. Read more

The Learning Sanctuary childcare has been an absolute blessing for our family. From the moment we enrolled our child, we have been consistently impressed by the high standards and caring atmosphere. One of the standout features is the dedication to providing fresh, nutritious food daily. It's reassuring to know that our child is getting healthy meals that support her growth and development. The staff at the Learning Sanctuary are, without a doubt, the most caring and attentive educators and management we have met. They go above and beyond to ensure our child feels loved, secure, and engaged. It's obvious that they are passionate about what they do. We couldn't be happier with our choice and highly recommend the Learning Sanctuary to any family looking for exceptional childcare. Read more
