Welcome to Mother Duck Child Care Gaythorne
We provide rich educational programs for children and are committed to providing a support network for busy working families. Our Gaythorne child care centre acts as an extension of the home. We maintain ongoing links within the community through our centre programs. Our literacy-enriched program is enhanced with the support of the local library and our local school connections ensure that children in our Kindergarten program transition successfully into their preparatory year.
We know that the first five years shape your child’s development and learning for life. That’s why our daily programs are thoughtfully designed for intellectual, emotional, social and physical wellbeing and development. Curiosity, creativity and exploration are encouraged in a safe and supportive environment.
This strong foundation helps foster a lifelong love of learning.

As a parent you’re always a bit nervous about your little one, but the team have been nothing less than exceptional! She absolutely loves her time at Mother Duck.
Matthew - Parent
From day one I always felt like my little girl was receiving the best possible care at Mother Duck Gaythorne. All of the educators are warm, kind and caring.
It has been amazing to watch my little girl grow from a baby to a little person through the different stages of early learning and to see the special bonds she has developed with so many of the educators and other kids. She learns so many new things that I wouldn’t even think to teach her and her independence has been encouraged from an early age. I love that her little personality is nurtured and that she is in a safe space to explore and learn in preparation for school.
I look forward to seeing how my new little Bub grows at Mother Duck next year and wouldn’t consider anywhere else! Thank you to all of the amazing educators who make our life so much easier and take such excellent care of our little one when we aren’t available.

We're so happy with the community of Mother Duck for our little man. He celebrates before coming in the mornings - and is so busy playing in the afternoon he'll often not notice I'm there. The team of educators in his room clearly adore the kids and have wonderful little observations about his day and developments to tell me about at pickup.
We especially love the centre's emphasis on helping the kids to be autonomous - we are constantly surprised at how able Brody is, how proud he is to help with chores or clean up his plate after meals, through the skills he has learned at Mother Duck. And the mixed age approach in his Studio has taught him so much empathy towards others.

About the curriculum
About the curriculum
In the infant studio, the educators follow a flexible schedule that is responsive to the needs of the individual child. Parents are encouraged to share their home routine with the educators, as they understand how important routine can be to children of this age.
Educators work to form a secure attachment with the children, as well as building relationships with the families. Parents receive a daily log from the educators which covers their child’s feeding, sleeping and toileting patterns.
The focus for the children is on those basic first skills such as sitting, crawling and walking. Educators seek to develop language skills of the children with conversation, singing and reading.
Children in the Juniors studio are developing their skills in confidence and independence, within a safe and secure environment. A consistent routine and familiar educators build a sense of security, so your child can confidently engage in learning. Socialisation will be gently encouraged and guided to help friendships and empathy form.
Your child’s growing independence is supported by caring educators who will help them take the first steps in toilet training. Educators will communicate openly with parents through conversation, as well as a daily record of your child’s eating, sleeping and toileting.
The play-based educational program is tailored to each child’s learning needs and interests. Emerging intellectual, social, emotional, physical and language skills are built on and extended.
The children in the Seniors room are developing skills in friendships and cooperative play, with the help of their educators. The children are encouraged to explore and experiment in a safe space, and educators work with children’s own interests to guide their learning.
Literacy and numeracy skills are developed through games and social interaction. Educators keep parents informed of the children’s day, their challenges, changes and daily routine.
The state government funded kindergarten is led by university qualified teachers, with a focus on building the children’s capacity for responsibility and accountability for their own learning.
With the longer hours of a child care centre, the kindergarten children have an extended opportunity to access the curriculum, giving the children scope to work on long term projects of inquiry in order to empower them as 21st century thinkers and communicators.
The key for the children is to prepare them for the transition to formal education. The children make their learning visible through words, drawing, numbers, dance, painting, clay, music, movement, loose parts, transformative play and more.

At Mother Duck Gaythorne, the focus of the educators is on reflective practice to ensure they understand all they can about children and their development; finding new and innovative ways to solve problems, engage in challenging tasks, and using information technology and print-based texts to find things out; giving children the gift of time to listen to their ideas and incorporate these into the curriculum; sustainable practices to teach the children how to be a valuable member of society; and teaching children skills beyond academics such as compassion, collaboration, empathy, kindness, grace and honesty.
Mother Duck Gaythorne has a strong focus on staff retention. The centre’s leadership team consists of four long term employees with a combined experience of almost 50 years with Mother Duck. Along with the leadership team there are a number of educators who have been with the centre for many years.
We have a strong focus on the 21st century life skills and believe in building skills that will set children up for life, not just the first few years of school. As we have deepened our understanding of children as important members of our society we have begun to look at our work as early childhood educators through a new lens. This lens helps us to uphold and continue working on our belief that all children are worthy, able and authentic.
Daneiren - Centre Manager, Mother Duck Gaythorne
I love working in such a positive environment that advocates for the rights of the child in every aspect of the curriculum. I love forming strong relationships with children and families and being the connection for families whilst they are away from their children.
Aerryn - Educational Leader
I am grateful to work with so many wonderful educators that constantly challenge each other to be the best educators we can.

Mother Duck’s own dietitian, Fiona Hinton, prepares the menus for the centre and has over 20 years of experience. Fiona specialises in real-life strategies and practical suggestions to convert nutrition advice into food kids will eat. Fiona has collaborated on several books, including one with best-selling children’s food writer Annabel Karmel, as well as training childcare staff in children’s nutrition.
At Mother Duck Gaythorne, the children play a role in ordering the food each week, often sharing their opinions on what fruit and vegetables should be on offer. The children are also responsible for collecting the food from the kitchen and bringing it to their studio for each meal time.
Each studio has a dining area where the children eat all of their meals. The mealtimes are progressive allowing the children to decide when they are hungry. The children also serve their own meals, wash their dishes and assist with the set up and cleanup of the space. The centre has a qualified chef with over 20 years’ experience who provides the children with a nutritional morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.

I was nervous for my daughter (10m) to start attending day-care, but the staff at Motherduck were so supportive, and the transition has been a really positive experience for both of us. In particular, it’s been delightful to see how Miss Zoe in the Infant Studio forms a caring and genuine attachment with each and every child in her care. I love how excited my daughter gets to see her, and am in awe at how she gives such warm and loving attention to all the little ones in the room. You can tell that they adore her, and I feel happy leaving my child, knowing she’s in good hands. The rest of the staff are just as lovely - all greet my daughter by name as we arrive or leave, and go out of their way to make us feel welcome and supported. And unlike the sterile feeling I’ve gotten from other centres, the centre itself is beautiful, clean, and decorated in a way that feels homely. They provide so many fun activities and outdoor time, and I can tell my daughter loves her days there. I would recommend to anyone looking for a high quality day-care. Read more
