About the curriculum
About the curriculum
Our centre develops its early learning curriculum in line with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework.
The structured and comprehensive curriculum is designed to support and enhance young children’s learning, with unique programs tailored to suit the age and development stage of a child.
The first 5 years of a child’s life significantly affects their learning, health and well-being. The curriculum provides children with opportunities to learn, grow, play, build relationships and to develop positive social skills, giving them the best possible chance to thrive and excel.
The curriculum is designed around play-based learning. Children take part in free and structured imaginative play, and are encouraged to develop their unique personalities. The curriculum enhances curiosity and creativity, and enables children to make connections between prior experiences and new learning.
Educators listen to children’s ideas and observe their interests to expand on their play experiences. The centre curriculum also encourages self-awareness skills, including:
- Having care, empathy and respect
- Becoming autonomous and independent
- Being confident and communicative
- Understanding oneself and a sense of security

Morning
Amelia is 9 months old and a new arrival at Footscray Early Learning Centre. She starts her day with some time spent in the sandpit. She loves the feeling of the sand between her fingers, and is excited when an educator helps her build a sandcastle.
Lunch
It’s reading time after lunch. Amelia looks at the brightly coloured book cover and enjoys listening to a story before she has her afternoon nap.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, the educators put out some pots of brightly coloured paint. Amelia picks orange and yellow, and creates a beautiful picture with her hands.
Morning
When 3 year-old Ben arrives at the centre, he loves heading outside to his favourite climbing frame. He used to be scared but he is learning to be brave and confident with the encouragement of the educators.
Lunch
After lunch, Ben and his friends are learning about sustainability. The educators talk about compost bins and worm farms and Ben is excited to talk to his parents about it when he gets home.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, Ben and his friends have some music time. He gets to pick an instrument and chooses a small drum, which he bangs in time to the music.
Morning
5-year-old Jake has been at the centre for the past 3 years and feels right at home. He is excited to start big school next year and this morning he and his friends practice writing their names.
Lunch
Before lunch, the preschoolers participate in a cooking class. Today they measure out ingredients and bake some muffins which they will all share for afternoon tea.
Afternoon
The children have been learning about science, and today the educators talk about gravity. They go outside and practice dropping a ball to the ground to see what happens.
