About the Curriculum
About the Curriculum
“Let the child be the scriptwriter, director and the actor in their own play” - Magda Gerber
Nursery Space: 6 weeks – 2 years
Learning starts from before birth, and our Educators have created a welcoming and nurturing nursery environment where each baby feels safe to explore and discover new things - through their senses, their communication and cues (body language, facial expression and sounds) and by experimenting. On any given day you can see the nursery children engaging in all types of play, water play, music time, story time and more. Every day provides a brand new, exciting adventure for our babies to support their development, learning and wellbeing!
Toddler Space: 2 - 3 years
Our teachers and educators encourage the children to learn through play to help enhance their sensory-motor development. This happens through carefully planned music, dance, games and reading experiences.
On any given day the Toddler children can be seen developing their numeracy by building a tower, sorting objects, pointing and identifying shapes and patterns and participating in counting songs and games.
Children in our toddler space are encouraged to participate in group play. Group play is important as it helps our toddlers develop important social skills such as, turn taking, developing self confidence and emotional self regulation. Our team helps children through talking, planning and role modelling.
Kindergarten Space: 3 – 6 years
Kindergarten is a unique time for learning with peers and developing skills for later learning including confidence and curiosity, important skills for starting school. Our play-based program encourages active engagement in learning and supports a range of positive developmental outcomes including resilience, independence, critical thinking and creativity.
The oral language supports literacy learning. A child’s oral language ability is the best predictor for later success in learning to read and write. Hearing the sounds within a language is the first critical step for all literacy learning. Our team supports our Kindergarten children's development by engaging in rich discussions, introducing new vocabulary as part of everyday conversations, as well as singing, playing games, and reading with the children daily.
Throughout the Kindergarten year, children use their language to share ideas, ask questions, express themselves, and connect with peers and adults in social settings.
Social-emotional skills, including the ability to self-regulate emotions, is supported through group learning environments. Our team supports each child’s social and emotional development by labelling and talking about emotions and supporting appropriate responses as together, they engage in new and challenging situations. Lastly, ensuring that all children are ready for the ‘big school’ by preparing them for all that ‘big school’ has to offer.
Morning
Anita is 11 months old and enjoys sensory play outside in the sandpit with her friends. She sits near her educator who helps teach her how to scoop the sand into the bucket. Anita is learning how to dig, carry, and move the sand. She is also exploring texture and learning what happens to the sand when she adds water!
Lunch
Anita has finished her lunch and is preparing to take a nap. Her educator changes her nappy, prepares a bottle and reads Anita a story before her afternoon sleep.
Afternoon
Anita and some of her nursery friends enjoy some story time and songs outside in the shaded garden. They read ‘Peepo’ which is Anita’s favourite book.
Morning
Luca is two and a half years old and loves to start his day at the centre outside on the climbing equipment. His friends join him, and together they pretend to be pirates on a ship looking for treasure. Through this exciting dramatic play, Luca is learning about himself and the world around him. Dramatic play is helping Luca identify his interests, abilities, likes and dislikes.
Lunch
Luca is watering the vegetables in the garden. By doing this, Luca is learning the importance of growing and caring for the veggies in the garden. Luca picks a tomato from the garden, which the Chef will use to help make Luca and his friend’s lunch - Spaghetti Bolognese!
Afternoon
Luca enjoys art, and today he is painting a beach scene from a recent family holiday. He adds the finishing touches and sets the painting aside to dry; so that he can take it home to share with his family.
While painting, Luca is learning how to express himself creatively and how to convey his ideas and emotions. Painting is also helping develop Luca’s hand eye coordination, finger, wrist and hand strength. Making marks on paper is important for self expression as well as later learning.
Morning
Ava is almost five years old and can’t wait for today’s carpentry experience - she loves building things! Carpentry experiences allow Ava and her friends to extend their learning through real-life experiences. While participating in carpentry, Ava is learning to problem solve, experiment and predict. She is also improving her hand eye coordination, manipulative skills and muscular strength.
Lunch
Before Ava sits down for lunch with her friends and educators, Ava takes part in the centre’s sports program. Ava loves sports. Sports helps Ava improve her flexibility and strength (perfect for growing bodies!). Sports also allows her to practice different skills in a fun and engaging way.
Afternoon
Ava is off to ‘big school’ next year and she can't wait to start! Ava and her friends will be visiting the local primary school next week. In preparation for the visit, the class is creating a list of questions to ask the Principal and school children.
Health and Nutrition
Health and Nutrition
Our centre chef prepares and cooks healthy and nutritious meals daily, catering to the unique dietary requirements of every child. We believe that by encouraging active participation (such as growing their own fruit and vegetables, preparing, and finally cooking!) children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of healthy eating.
Our centre offers children nutrient-rich, unprocessed, and seasonal whole foods – created to delight the fussiest eaters.

My name is Shelley and I am the Centre Manager at Templestowe World of Learning. I began my career in early childhood education and care in 2003 and started working at Templestowe World of Learning in 2011. I hold an Advanced Diploma of education and care and a Graduate certificate of Education.
I have worked in early learning since I was 17 years old, working as a room leader and then progressing into management over the last 12 years. I was inspired to work with children to make a difference. What I love about my role is having a beautiful team of educators that I work with each and every day and the families. I love getting to know the children and the families. Being hands on is important to me.
The first 5 years are the most important of a child’s life. They set the foundation for future learning. All childcare centres, including our centre, use the foundation of play-based learning to guide our experiences every day. With access to a range of age-appropriate learning resources, trained educators, and new experiences among friends, we set children up to thrive in an environment that is dedicated to learning. Children develop their curiosity, problem-solving, confidence and resilience at our centre, and we carefully plan play-based learning experiences around their interests and learning goals. Over time, you will see your child develop abilities such as language, motor movement, memory, concentration and social relationships all by partaking in these experiences - it's a truly incredible journey to witness!
I have a team of educators that are long standing, some being at the centre for 18 years. They are very experienced and passionate educators. They all have a love for working with children, come up with some great new ideas all the time and help the families in any way they can. Our team compromises of three Early Childhood Teachers and diploma qualified educators. All educators have up to date first aid training. We believe in specialists for a room. So, educators are rarely moved from their current room. This means that when your child joins the centre they have years of experience working with that current age group.
My child protection statement – is that all children deserved to be respected and valued. To ensure all educators uphold the highest of standards in regard to health and safety and that our educators update their training every 6 months.
We support our families by getting to know them, talking to them and seeing how we can help and at times referring them to local companies that could offer support if there is a need. Being there for the families is very important. Being a small 60 place centre, we have close relationships with our families. We love to have a theatre performance every year for the graduating children for that year and a Christmas party at the local play centre.
I believe I understand families well is because I am mother myself. For me, being able to help families every step of the way from enrolling with Centrelink to helping them know what to bring for their child’s first day is key.

Finding the right centre and knowing that when i left my 2 children in the morning and who i left them with stressed me out. I was always going to try to not have to use childcare but life changed and it became i had no choice. I looked at all the centres in the area about 3 times, probably driving them all crazy, sorry. Choosing Templestowe world of learning was by far the best choice for my family. My Little baby has not been in an overcrowded room, lots of one on one time for her to settle and for me not to worry. The Prekinder room is also amazing with the educators in the room experienced and have been at the centre for a long time, and you can tell from first interaction (highly trained). They do lots of different things with the children from experiments to learning about different cultures. Would like to thank Shelley and Kaya for being a big rock to me and my family. They have made settling into this Centre and community one that I will cherish. You have made my life so easy knowing my children are well taken care of. Read more

This was the 2nd kinder my kid went to and it’s horrible, she wasn’t allowed to use the bathroom during nap time and was always so uncomfortable because she needed to sleep on the floor. Yes there was no mats nor blankets. Plus once she was using the bathroom because she had a stomach ache, they said she was using it for too long and made her wipe. There was also no hand wash for after the bathroom use. Disgusting 0/10, during the Christmas carols the teachers were yelling at the kids to not lip sync Read more
