Curriculum and programs
Curriculum and programs
The educators at Goodstart Early Learning follow an evidence-based curriculum that aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework. Informed by world-leading research, practices and techniques, the curriculum encourages the children’s natural curiosity and engages them in their learning journey.
As the children move through the different rooms in the centre, the curriculum evolves with them. The educators set goals for the children and celebrate as they reach their milestones. At every stage, the educators are tailoring the curriculum and goals to each child’s individual needs.
The curriculum involves different types of learning experiences and styles. From child-led learning to sessions guided by educators, the children participate in small and large group sessions as well as individual play. Most importantly, the children learn through play, developing social skills, confidence and independence in addition to more formal academic skills.
Play is the order of the day of Goodstart Early Learning and the programs at the centre are grounded in a play-based approach. The educators embed teaching and learning into play experiences, helping the children to make sense of the world around them. This is how the children learn about how things work and develop important foundational relationships and skills.
The primarily child-directed, play-based curriculum ensures that the children are engaged in their learning. They are encouraged to take the lead, developing their negotiation, risk taking, problem solving and social skills. The educators observe the children and help to challenge them by extending their learning and interests.
The educators recognise that every child is unique and that they bring their own needs, interests and strengths with them each day. The program is designed to be flexible to cater to these differing needs, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive at Goodstart.
Parent communication and involvement
Parent communication and involvement
Goodstart Early Learning uses the StoryPark app to connect with parents throughout the day. The educators upload photos and stories to the secure app, which parents can access anytime and anywhere to track their child’s progress.
The approach at the centre is very much based around partnership between families and educators. The educators work with the parents and carers to build strong relationships. They develop trust so the children can feel safe and secure while at the centre. Parents are also encouraged to share their insights and feedback with educators to add depth to the relationship.
The educators observe the children every day and tailor the program around their observations. They share these with parents, so they can feel connected to their child’s progress and also provide feedback that will further enhance their child’s learning experience.

Kashmira Bhathena
Hello, I am Kashmira, the Centre Director here at Goodstart Clarinda.
Hello, Namaste, Wominjeka, Kia ora, Ni hao, Sat sri kal, bonjour, Ciao, Ya sas. My name is Kashmira Naushad Bhathena, born in Mumbai, India. I have completed my Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mumbai University and my post graduate Diploma in early childhood education from University of Auckland.
I was working as preparatory teacher in a state government school for a year before I moved to Auckland, New Zealand in 2004 where I restarted my early childhood journey. In 2013 I moved from New Zealand to Melbourne, Australia. I have over 20 years of experience in the early childhood education. I have been working at Goodstart since 2013.
I believe it takes a village to raise a child, there are various factors from family, childcare setting/school to our local community that influence in shaping the identity of a child. The first 5years are crucial in building the strong foundation for children which will enhance their identity throughout their life. When children are enrolled in our service, we nurture them and enhance and extend their prior knowledge in order to achieve best outcomes for them. I view a child as a capable, competent human being who is learning more than 100 languages of life by being a curious, exploring, in awe of the big wide world, filled with wonderment, discoverer, full of questions and I believe we need to support the 100 languages to encourage their love for lifelong learning. I believe learning doesn’t only occur within the walls of our service but our outdoor environment and the wider community play an important role to enhance children’s as valued members of our community.
Goodstart is the largest not for profit organisation in our early childhood sector and I believe all decision making that takes place is for the betterment of our community of learners. They are advocating on behalf of the various stakeholders with the government which will help with achieving best outcomes for the community.
I believe in building strong trusting and respectful relationship with our children and families to help understand their needs, interest, goals, and aspiration which will help us t extend learning and development of our children. I always want to support families with suggestions, professional development, links with other community partners to overcome various parenting challenges they might come across.
I look forward to welcoming you and your family to Goodstart Clarinda. We warmly welcome new families, so please stop by! We would love to explore how we can support you and your child on their pathway to lifelong learning.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions, or better yet, to see firsthand the wonderful environment we've created for our children. Together, we can make these early years enriching and memorable.
Warm regards,
Kashmira Bhathena

Centre Reviews

This review is a few years late but better late than never 😊 Today is the last day of childcare for my kids at this centre and I had to make sure I submit my review while everything is still so fresh. We started here when my older one was 14 months old (He is 3.5yrs old now). Before starting here, I had trialled another childcare, but I was not happy with that one at all. The issue with the other one was that if my child refused to eat, they didn’t feed him, and then would call us midday to pick him up as he was so hungry and had not eaten all day. Anyways, somehow I stumbled upon this centre and booked a tour. I went on the tour and was greeted by Parminder who showed us around. I asked her what would she do if my kid didn’t eat. And she said something so simple yet it made me cry happy tears. She said that she will try to offer different options to my son if he refuses to eat. And keep trying until he eats 😊 This was so so so important to me as a mother to know that my child will be looked after and will not go hungry all day. This was just one of the many things that I came across at the tour, that I immediately changed childcares at the earliest. And from there on we never looked back. The next day after joining the rating of this place became Excellent! And I was not surprised at all! My son was so happy since the day he started here. I won’t lie there were morning tears and all that, but I knew he was in a safe place. The educators are so nurturing and caring. They treat our kids like their own. Any feedback I had ever was taken onboard immediately with maturity. I never ever felt hesitant to pick up the phone and call to check on my child. And the best part is that this culture is top down, it starts from the Director, from Kash. She is a superstar!! Me and my husband always talk about how amazing Kash’s leadership is. She always has clear directions for everyone. There is a special bond between all the educators. They look after one another. This childcare is all about relationships. Every time I pick up my kids, it is hard for me to leave the place and get home in time, because I want to chat to everyone who has been on this journey with us. Of course some days I just have to leave in a hurry but it just never feels awkward here. Never! We were so happy with this centre, that for all these years we travelled nearly 30 mins one way (2 hours per day) for our child. As impractical as it was, I just could not imagine changing childcares. We even declined an offer we got at another childcare (after 3 years of being in waiting), even though it was a 5 mins walk from our place. We were so happy here that we decided to have another baby 😃 And that baby went straight to the Nursery room when he was 10 months old. And again, like with the first experience, we were so happy to see how well our second child adjusted here. The staff have supported me at every transition of my life. When I was pregnant, when I was getting back to work, when our family had a car accident…just always - no matter how big or small the matter was. I just had to share my life concerns and they would be ready to offer any support possible. And mind you, all practical support. As a family we are heartbroken to be leaving this centre, but have to because of unexpected family circumstances. Even through this last phase of the journey at the centre, we have been supported. My kids have formed some amazing bonds here with the educators and the children. I consider myself extremely blessed to have found this centre. And for my kids to have gotten all the love and memories they got along the way. I can’t imagine how life will be from here on for us as family. We will sorely miss the people we met, the community we belonged to and the feeling of extended family we got every day! I am grateful to each and every person who makes Goodstart Clarinda the perfect place that it is!
