If you're a parent, chances are high that you already know how to set up a nursery. It tends to be less about the environment and more focused on the aesthetics of the baby's room. Having a nursery setup that's warm and inviting is of course lovely, but having a baby nursery that's conducive to sleep is imperative!
When Kuz asked Maryanne for her advice around setting up the nursery for his baby, due in April, she wasted no time letting him know her thoughts on red lighting and noise machines.
Key callouts.
Keep it simple.
Your baby has very simple needs. Despite what the manufacturers tell you, babies don't need noise machines, music machines, or red lighting. Those devices can be very interruptive to sleep.
Your baby has very naturally occurring sleep cycles. Make sure you differentiate between the two in the sleep environment. Night-time sleep should be very dark with little to no stimulation in there – it's so important to your baby's circadian rhythm.
Day sleep is very different and should be treated as such.
Nursery
Your baby's nursery should be dark and cosy with a bassinet or cot and that's really it when it comes to sleep – the rest is all aesthetic. Bringing sleep aids into the equation creates a really artificial environment that isn't conducive to sleep. We're trying to create a natural sleep environment to help our baby fall asleep soundly.
Keep it simple!
It's human nature to overcomplicate things, particularly when it comes to our children. It's easy to go overboard while awaiting our baby's arrival. It's important to remember in every part of our parenting lives to keep it simple – let's not make anything harder than it needs to be!
