In an effort to provide additional support and guidance support to early childhood education and care providers ACECQA publishes occasional papers, which take a deep dive into particular Quality Areas within the National Quality Framework.
ACECQA's most recent occasional paper analyses one of the more challenging areas of the National Quality Standard (NQS), Quality Area 3 – Physical environment.
In this Quality Area, the NQS assesses the safety and suitability of the physical environment provided by an early childhood service, as well as whether it offers a rich and diverse range of experiences that promote children's learning and development.
Along with a detailed analysis of the requirements of Quality Area 3, the paper identifies Standard 3.3 (sustainable practices and environmental responsibility) as the most challenging aspect of Quality Area 3 for services to meet.
The paper offers insights into how services meeting this standard are doing so and explains why this standard is so important.
